Twitter does not allow us to delete multiple DMs in one go. I haven’t thought about deleting DMs until the Twitter Phishing scam epidemic came as a shocker.

Why Do I Want To Delete DMs:
Reason 1: I want to delete the ugly, boring and scam links from my accounts (mostly auto DMs)
Reason 2: I am never going to read through all those 600+ DMs
Reason 3: Twhirl loads DMs first, thereby taking a while to load.
Reason 4: I’ve taken a backup of the messages, so there is no point in having them piled under the direct messages tab.

So how do we delete twitter DMs.

Back Up: I suggest you take a backup of your DMs with http://tweetake.com/. Provide your userid and password and choose from the options. Download the excel file and double check for its accuracy.

Use this tool to delete all Twitter DMs in one go. http://dcortesi.com/tools/dm-deleter/.
Steps to delete all your Twitter DMs in one go.

Step 1: Drag this Twitter DM Deleter bookmarklet to your bookmarks tab.

Step 2: Sign in to your twitter account and go to Direct messages page (link to direct messages is on the right side bar of your twitter home page). http://twitter.com/direct_messages

Step 3: Click on the bookmarklet that reads “DM Whacker”. A twitter DM deleter area appears on the sidebar.

You can choose to delete all the DMs or DMs from a specific tweeter. Don’t use @ before the tweeter’s name.

Starting afresh with a lighter DM page feels great.

What is your opinion about deleting DMs? Does taking a backup make you feel think differently?

Connect with me on Twitter, if you aren’t already my twitter friend. Shri :)

I’m just using this tool, and so far so good. I have over 200 DMs in my inbox, and have basically read them all, however I didn’t delete them when I had finished reading them because I still needed some details people had sent me.

However, I have now removed all of them using this great tool.
