Top 10 reasons why you must comment on blogs
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
It all started as a discussion on twittermoms community. There was a good question raised by one of the twittermoms, by snappymom. “How important is it to leave a comment when you read a blog?”. You can read the full discussion here.
And here are 10 reasons why I think posting comments on other blogs is very important.
- Posting thoughtful comments on authority blogs (consistently), helps in building brand identity & eventually brings in loads of traffic.
- Even if the geek blogger misses to notice, at least 10% of those thousands of blog readers are bound to notice your comments.
- Lets imagine: If you are lucky enough & the geek blogger notices your comments, and requests you to write a guest post. Lol! Fortune Shower. (History has examples).
- Ping backs & comments are great for networking. Ping a small blog’s post n do them a favor. You can expect a favor in return later.
- Though google doesn’t consider links in comments, yahoo does…improving your yahoo search rating.
- If you have a thoughtful comment, you can elaborate it into a blog post. (This post is an example. As i mentioned earlier, this post kicked off from a discussion on a great community called Twittermoms.
- Time sucker? Restrict the number of blogs you want to comment on & stick to them consistently.
- Commenting on new blogs aspiring for exposure has its own advantage. You build personal relationship & easy to get pingbacks & guest post requests..thereby improving organic links.
- Its so humane to appreciate somebody for their thoughtful blog posts. Gives them a warm feeling. Its great to be good sometimes.
- As Astacia (one of the twittermoms) quoted “It lets me know that I am not typing into the ether”. Brrrr! internal monologue. The thought scares me.
As Meghan (another twittermom) Said, “reader gets to contribute to the discussion making it a community rather than just one-way information”.
So Its all about interacting with other bloggers (same niche or not) and becoming part of a network.
Tip: Use anchor text (your preferred keyword) in the name field of the comment box. Yahoo loves it. Try link:http://www.domain.ext in yahoo search box and see how many links you’ve aggregated.

Here is my comment
There is one thing that bloggers (myself included) can do to help encourage comments and that is to notify people that you have responded to their comment. This is especially important for people who have stumbled across your blog/post by accident.
If I notice a comment from someone new, I drop them an email to let them know I have responded. My hope is that this encourages people to return rather than leave a comment and then move on.
Not really a scalable option I know, but it works for me.
Good points, Shri..and it seemed apt to leave a comment.
I always comment on blogs when I can. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been able to get a problem resolved, or connected with like minded individuals from blog-commenting over the years. Great blog…have now subscribed to the feed. chz.
Hi @Bill @John Connolly
Thx for commenting & adding great points.
I think we should only comment if the comment can add insight or value to the readers. Commenting for commenting sake adds no value.
I appreciate your points and concur…it is so good to see a comment because support or another view on your post may bring comfort and understanding. Thanks for your post!
Blogs can give you tremendous exposure. As you build content on the blog, like minded people join in. Lot of people find your blog through search engines, looking for things of similar interest as yours, thus giving you quite a bit of exposure. Blogs being inherently Search Engine friendly help quite a bit.

Hi @Jim Estill. I am with you Jim.
We are aware of auto-commenting softwares which add a general comment without actually visiting/reading the blog. I detest such comments. Comments “nice site. thx” doesn’t mean much to me. I am saying that commenting on blogs can be used to build relations (personal interaction as well as business relations).
Hi @melanie. Thx for the comment & adding a great point. Loved your blog
Hi @Rhon, Great points again Rhon.
I started off with 10 points about commenting & you all have added 7 more points and turned it into a discussion.
Isn’t this the finest of the advantages of blogs.
This is a great post. I have to agree about not commenting for commenting sake (did that make sense?). Don’t get me wrong, I love comments. I just would like people to leave me a comment if it is something the post interests them.
A new trend is storming the blogosphere – video comments! Though Viddler had released a wordpress plugin earlier enabling video comments, it needed a word from Techcrunch to get the ball rolling. Be prepared for more fun with comments.

Hi @Jenn P
True Jenn. As I mentioned earlier “nice site” kind of impersonal comments make me think they are spam comments.
Hi @hennry,
Thats news to me and a great one. Thanks for adding it. It’ll be too cool to have video comments as an option.
great blog! I’ll subscribe!
hmm simple advices which can make ur blog famous too……
I always try to leave comments when possible. Even though I drop EC, more often than not I always find great posts to read & comment on. I did a post on Blog the Recession ~ Leave Linky Luv. Thanks for a great post!
Hi @Piolo Pascual. Glad you liked the blog.
Hi @harish. Advices are always simple. It is the “call-to-action & persistence” that are difficult. Without these, there cannot be success.
Hi Cindi, Blog the Recession ~ Leave Linky Luv sounds a great idea. Would love to join the bandwagon.
I love how you turned the twittermoms convo into a blog post! And I really love comments, I think especially cause my blogs don’t get many yet and I definitely like to feel like I’m not talking to myself out here in internetland!
That was a awesome article and some real nice comments. I too agree that commenting is very essential and adds to the enthusiasm of the blog creator to add more interesting stuff.

Hi Shri Another great post. I especially appreciate #8 It is humane… As a person reading blogs, it is easy to get caught up in “info hunting” mode and not stop to appreciate the simple generosity of the person posting the information, (and there is a generosity to it even when it is part of an overall marketing strategy)
As a person looking to use blog commenting as part of my own marketing strategy it is easy to get caught up in my own stratigizing and forget about the basic value of relating human to human without having an angle. Paradoxically I think those moments of no agenda “reaching out to touch someone” can have a profound long term positive impact that can’t be quantified by back links, exposure or even a new relationship that might emerge from reaching out.
Hi Tamo,
Thanks for your input and adding value to the blog post.
I never realized the impact this post would have on the readers and on ME when I started writing it. The emotional value comments have on the blogger are invaluable.
Made great connections with this post here n elsewhere and achieved intangible results. I’m glad you are a part of our small community .
